Boom.tv Announces World's First 3D Livestreaming Platform for eSports and $3.5M in Funding
New eSports startup lets viewers experience gameplay from any perspective on any device
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Boom.tv today announced the beta launch of the world's first 3D livestreaming platform for eSports along with a $3.5M seed round. The platform constructs a true 3D experience from a player's game stream in real time, enabling fans to experience gameplay of popular eSports titles from any perspective on any PC or mobile device, with support for VR coming soon.
The eSports audience continues to skyrocket, and is predicted to reach 292 million this year.[1] But, until now, this vast audience has been held captive to the camera angle of the player. With Boom.tv, the viewer experience will be far more exciting, social, and interactive.
"Improved broadcast technology was the tentpole around which professional sports mushroomed," said Sumit Gupta, Boom.tv CEO. "Our mission is to put 3D technology in the hands of millions of gamers and revolutionize the way eSports content is produced and consumed."
Boom.tv's first application lets streamers engage with their fans and revolutionizes the viewing experience by enabling instant replays and multiple viewing angles. Players simply run the Boom.tv app while streaming gameplay and patent-pending technology renders the gamestream in 3D, delivering a better, higher-fidelity spectating experience in real time. There is no prior integration from game developers required. The app, available in beta starting today, also allows streamers to create one-click highlight montages and easily share them to social media, opening up the potential for new sponsorship opportunities.
Boom.tv will soon release an update to the app that will allow streamers to broadcast in virtual reality, delivering an immersive experience that simulates actually being in the game. With this update, viewers will be able experience the game stream in full VR using the headset of their choice.
"While we've seen piecemeal solutions in this space previously, the technology behind Boom.tv is transformational, and their team of 30 engineers have both the passion and know-how to build an end-to-end solution that will completely enhance the eSports spectator experience, particularly in VR," said Chris Fralic, partner at First Round Capital.
Boom.tv is using their $3.5M in seed funding to support the top ten eSports titles and expand their platform to the larger gamer and eSports communities. The funding included participation from First Round Capital, Tandem Capital, Crosscut Ventures, Betaworks, Boost VC, BITKRAFT eSports Ventures.
Boom.tv's 3D livestreaming platform is currently available for eSports titles CS:GO and LOL. Interested streamers are encouraged to sign up for the beta at http://www.boom.tv/signup
