TULSA, Okla., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- PennWell Corporation is pleased to announce the selection of Oil & Gas Journal's editor-in-chief, Bob Tippee, as the 2010 recipient of the prestigious Crain Award, presented by American Business Media at its awards ceremony in New York City today. Since the inception of the annual Crain Award more than 40 years ago, Bob Tippee is only the second editor, specifically serving the petroleum industry, to win this highly coveted award. The first petroleum industry editor so honored was Oil & Gas Journal's George Weber, back in 1978. This annual award, named for business publication editor and founder of BtoB (formerly Business Marketing) and Advertising Age, G. D. Crain, recognizes a single individual for outstanding contributions to editorial excellence in the business media.

According to American Business Media, winners of the Crain Award have demonstrated a proven record of editorial accomplishment including formulating and directing editorial activities; assuming leadership in the field the publication serves; maintaining the highest editorial standards; and advancing ABM's tradition of editorial initiative, leadership and integrity.
With regard to Bob Tippee's contributions to PennWell's long-standing success, President and CEO, Bob Biolchini, commented, "As editor of Oil & Gas Journal since 1999, Bob has repeatedly and courageously led the oil industry with his editorial vision and incisiveness, often embracing unpopular positions and doggedly supporting common sense interpretation of national and global energy issues. Oil and gas executives around the globe have come to rely on Bob's astute analysis and foreword looking editorial for gauging the future of the petroleum industry."
Tippee also helped pioneer the digital age with multimedia information strategies for the oil industry with the development and implementation of Oil & Gas Journal Online, as well as the launching of several industry specific electronic newsletters. He has authored several books, written and delivered hundreds of speeches, and is often featured on TV, radio, and online industry reports.
In reflecting on his tenure with PennWell, Tippee recently wrote, "I've written editorials for the Oil & Gas Journal every week since 1981 and never have been told what to write or what not to write. That kind of editorial independence is exemplary, essential to the value of our product, and something for which I'm eternally grateful."
