Best Fall Travel: Perdido Key, Fla. festivals celebrate blues, buccaneers and beer on the beach
PERDIDO KEY, Fla., July 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- There is only one place on the Gulf Coast where visitors can enjoy kayak and paddleboard races, live music, great barbeque, pirate treasure hunts, spectacular fireworks, beer samplings and intimate concerts by internationally recognized songwriters.
The place is Perdido Key —16 miles of white quartz sand and turquoise water nestled in the most remote and pristine corner of Florida's Gulf Coast.
Here's a quick look at this fall's lineup of events on the key:
Kayak, BBQ and Blues Festival
Aug. 31
9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The Blue Angels might be grounded for Labor Day, but the blues will be alive and well at Galvez Landing along the Inter-coastal waterway in Perdido Key. The day-long Kayak, BBQ and Blues Festival will feature kayak and paddleboard races, a BBQ cook-off, live blues music, nighttime fireworks show and even an incredible Flyboarding demonstration.
Perdido Key Pirate Festival
Sept. 14 - 15
10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
No black flags fly above the turquoise waters of Perdido Key these days. Most of the time, the only pirates who frequent these parts are the Pirates of Lost Treasure, a local Mardi Gras krewe. However, all that will change Sept. 14-15, when an eager horde of buccaneers descends on Big Lagoon State Park for the Perdido Key Pirate Festival, complete with pirate games, live music, a reptile show, arts and crafts vendors and a treasure hunt with thousands of dollars of loot to be uncovered.
Oktoberfest
Oct. 5, 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.
Oct. 6, Noon - 8 p.m.
Beer sampling, traditional German food, a live oompah band and much more will highlight 2013 Oktoberfest on the key at the iconic Flora-Bama bar, half of which sits in Alabama, half in Florida. There will even be a root beer garden for the kids and a "best dressed" costume contest. As one of the nation's largest and most celebrated beach bars, the Flora-Bama is the perfect site to celebrate America's version of this German tradition.
