Berlin Packaging Partners with Bottles for Babies to Save Children's Lives in Ghana
DALLAS, Sept. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Berlin Packaging, a leading full-service supplier of plastic, glass and metal containers and closures, has partnered with the humanitarian organization Bottles for Babies to support the group's efforts to save the lives of children in Ghana. For the second year, the local Berlin Packaging office will provide bottles as well as accompanying caps, labels and packaging that will be used to collect coin donations to purchase nutritional supplements, meals and clean water for the cause.
The bottles are given to participating school children, who collect loose change as part of service-learning projects that help teach compassion and the importance of giving back to others. Berlin Packaging donated more than 1,000 bottles to the organization last year, repurposing containers that do not meet the company's quality standards for client needs but that are ideal for Bottles for Babies' purposes. The number of bottles contributed is expected to at least double this year as more schools become involved in the campaign.
This year's Bottles for Babies fund-raising effort kicks off Sept. 17 at Howard Dobbs Elementary School in Rockwall, Texas, which will receive 500 bottles and informational flyers to launch the drive. Shadow Ridge Middle School in Flower Mound, TX, has agreed to participate with 500 to 600 bottles beginning in November. Other schools are also being recruited to join the effort.
The program benefits orphans in Tamale village in Ghana, West Africa, as well as malnourished children in the mud-hut village of Tarikpaa where daily meals often consist of beans, rice or millet, and families may have to walk miles to find a water source.
The powdered nutritional supplement supplied by Bottles for Babies is purchased from MannaRelief, a non-profit organization that provides nutrition to malnourished children around the globe. About $30 will pay for the nutritional supplement needed for one child for one year.
"Our first priority is to make sure that children get the nutritional supplement, which has vastly improved their health over the past year," said Cheryl Read, president of Bottles for Babies. "The campaign is growing with the help of schools and companies like Berlin Packaging, and we are able to see the impact we have on these children's lives."
"We are in the bottle business and the Bottles for Babies organization needs bottles to collect money. It's a perfect fit, and it allows Berlin to take action to help improve conditions for children on another continent," said Lori Smith, Berlin's Distribution Center Operations Manager in Dallas. "Watching children help other children with positive results is a real blessing and reward for all Berliners."
