Beauty Salons Get Green Makeover for America Recycles Week
New Partnership Helps Salons Recycle Plastic and Aerosol Beauty Product Containers
ATLANTA, Nov. 16, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The Beauty industry is often known for vanity – or beauty at any cost – including at the expense of the environment. But this week, in celebration of America Recycles Week, the nonprofit organization BeautyRecycled is rolling out a new recycling program in selected beauty salons to collect and recycle beauty product containers. And through a new partnership with Aerosolv, the group will even be able to safely recycle aerosol cans collected from beauty salons as part of this new effort.
BeautyRecycled launched this past year to spread the spirit of sustainability throughout the beauty world through ambitious industry-wide initiatives promoting environmental consciousness, landfill avoidance and green growth opportunities.
Aerosolv has partnered with BeautyRecycled, bringing their aerosol can recycling technology to beauty salons as part of a new initiative, Aerosolv Nation, which enlists community members, businesses and sustainability advocates to pledge to promote proper aerosol can recycling.
"Salons go through cans and cans of hair spray each week. Prior to our relationship with Aerosolv, we had no way to prevent these cans from going to the landfills," says Barrissa Gardner, Co-Executive Director of BeautyRecycled. "We are so excited about the potential environmental impact of this partnership with Aerosolv."
According to the International Organization of Aluminum Aerosol Container Manufacturers, a staggering 76% of aerosol cans on the market are bought by the cosmetics and beauty industry for products like hair sprays, deodorant and shaving creams. Aerosolv is the only aerosol can recycling technology to be awarded the US EPA's Environmental Technology Verification and the California EPA's Certification, and offers easy, safe and affordable technology for salons to recycle such cans when they are done with them.
BeautyRecycled is currently testing their program in beauty salons in Atlanta, Chattanooga, and San Francisco, helping to green their businesses. With plans to expand their reach nationwide, they also will be bringing the beauty products container recycling program to New York, Los Angeles and Chicago early next year.
