NEW YORK, Feb. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Bankers Healthcare Group, a leading provider of financial solutions for healthcare professionals, recently sponsored an Empire State Medical Association fundraising event to support scholarships for medical students of color from the New York City area. The event was held on February 10, 2016 at Chocolat Restaurant Lounge in Harlem, NYC. Scholarship recipient Ms. Simone Elder was in attendance.
Elder, an M.D. candidate at Weill Cornell Medical College, earned her B.A. at Rice University where she completed her Honors Thesis in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. She is a Gates Millennium Scholarship recipient and studied abroad focusing on women's health in India, China and South Africa, as well as language and culture in Paris. She also completed clinical research at Texas Children's Hospital.
At WCMC, Elder volunteers at the school's free clinic, is an active member of student clubs that advocate for patients without health insurance and is dedicated to increasing the number minorities in the field of healthcare. She serves as the Social Chair for the Students of Equal Opportunity in Medicine and is the founding member and mentor liaison for the Association of Women Surgeons at WCMC.

The event was hosted by the ESMA, the New York affiliate of the National Medical Association, in collaboration with Manhattan Central Medical Society, one of ESMA's local affiliates. The scholarship is administered by the National Medical Fellowships.
