SUNNYVALE, Calif. and OSLO, Norway, May 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Nor-Shipping Conf., Stand D01-01A, May 24, 2011 – Applied Weather Technology, Inc. (AWT), today announced significant safety enhancements to its innovative fleet management system, GlobalView™. These enhancements make GlobalView the first fleet management system to provide comprehensive pirate data and rogue wave alerts in one visual, easy-to-use format. This helps fleet managers to manage safe passage of their vessels through pirate attack areas, war risk waters and embargo areas, and regions known for rogue waves.

"At AWT, we are committed to consistent advancements and innovation of our products," said Skip Vaccarello, president and CEO for AWT. "By carefully listening to our customers, we are pleased to offer rogue wave and pirate data for display in GlobalView to help ensure vessel, crew and cargo safety."
Tracking Pirate Activity
With the integration of real-time NATO pirate tracking information, GlobalView provides a comprehensive, at-a-glance overview of all pirate-related information in one easy-to-use, customizable visual format. Available information includes mothership locations and anticipated trajectory, hijacking information and pirate attack group operating areas. Live links are now integrated into GlobalView, which give fleet managers one-click access to further NATO details in real-time. Additionally, users can customize the type of data available through myriad filters, including timeframe, location, type of pirate activity, historical data, and more.
Rogue Wave Alerts in GlobalView
AWT is the only company to provide severe motions and rogue wave alerts in its fleet management system, providing an extra level of safety and precaution that can be taken by shore-based fleet managers. GlobalView now shows areas to avoid that have the potential for rogue waves, which are constantly changing based on conditions at sea.
Rogue waves (also known as freak waves, monster waves, killer waves, extreme waves, and abnormal waves) are relatively large, spontaneous ocean waves that occur in the open ocean in deep water, and can be a threat to any vessel. The scientific definition is a wave whose height is more than twice the significant wave height (SWH), which is defined as the average of the largest third of waves in a given area. Rogue waves are not always the largest found at sea; they are, rather, surprisingly large waves for a given sea state and are normally steep faced and often breaking. AWT has developed a proprietary global model to forecast where current focusing rogue waves are likely to occur.
War Risk and Embargo Areas
GlobalView now provides visual information on war risk waters and embargo areas, as updated by the Joint War Committee of the IMO. Typically closer to shorelines, this helps fleet managers, captains and route analysts work together to visually identify these regions and either avoid or minimize exposure to high risk areas.
Additional Product Customization
In addition to significant safety enhancements, fleet managers can now further integrate valuable custom data into GlobalView to suit their specific needs. For customers that were already using Google™ Earth to display their internal data, they can now easily configure this data to be displayed through the resource filters in GlobalView. This makes it easier for fleet managers to display AWT's content and their own proprietary information at the same time.
"I have been using GlobalView and it is amazing! You don't need anything else once you have GlobalView," said Cameron McKenzie, fleet manager, Navigator Shipbrokers.
