Artists And Adventurers Reveal Rare Insights Into Papua New Guinea
NEW YORK, June 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On June 11th at the NYC Explorers Club, a panel of artists, photographers, filmmakers and adventurers will share stories of their time in Papua New Guinea.
This expert group will discuss how PNG has evolved from the 1930s to today, what it takes to make a documentary in the destination, how to tell the difference between tourist art and museum quality art and what's in store for PNG in 2016.
The event will also showcase rare black and white photographs of Papua New Guinea— never before seen in the U.S.
Join Tourism PNG for a panel discussion and luncheon with:
John Fairfull, a Canadian fine artist who spent four years as a boat captain in Papua New Guinea. John became so connected to the culture that he was initiated into a local tribe through "crocodile scarification," an ancient and harrowing ritual of scarring the body to represent the sacred crocodile.
Michele Westmorland, an award-winning marine photographer and member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame who has traveled to PNG more than 30 times. Michele was so inspired by the works of Caroline Mytinger, who journeyed to PNG in the 1930s to paint portraits of indigenous tribes, that she retraced the artist's footsteps in her documentary, Headhunt Revisited.
Wylda Bayron, a Nat Geo award-winning photographer who spent a year and a half traveling solo around PNG, where she photographed the traditional dress from each of the 22 provinces and achieved her goal of attending every festival in the country.
Mary Jane Murray, an experienced tour guide who has opened and managed lodges in PNG's most remote regions. While based in the Western Highlands, Mary was part of the organizing committee for the Mount Hagen Show, a renowned cultural festival where tribal members from every region showcase singing, music and elaborate costumes.
INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE BEFORE AND AFTER THE EVENT. VIDEO OF THE EVENT WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE.
