Arçelik Attends Climate Change Summit in Paris

Arçelik Group, parent company of Beko brand, attended two different panels at the Energy Day, at COP 21. During the day SE4All urged governments, businesses and financial institutions to act much faster to deliver on ambitious goals of ensuring sustainable energy for all while keeping global temperature rise within 20C.

Ragıp Balcıoğlu, Arçelik Group CCO for Global Sales, as the only representative from home appliances industry in "Focus on initiatives - Fuel Efficiency and Appliances" session explained Arçelik's pioneering works and contributions on scaling back carbon emissions, increasing resource efficiency, and their support for global initiatives for market transformation of energy efficient appliances in developing countries.
He said: "Demand for energy would increase by %50 by 2030 and water by 40%. It is expected that the quantity of appliances will grow rapidly in coming years with growth in GDP. This will result in increased ownership of appliances, mainly in non-OECD countries, where majority of our production is located".
"One of the most efficient methods to curb carbon emissions is ensuring energy efficiency, the main contributor at 57%. Energy consumption during use accounts for 95% of carbon emissions in total life cycle of home appliances. We continuously invest in R&D and innovation to manufacture the most energy efficient appliances. To achieve energy efficiency in global home appliances, incentivizing energy efficient products is the key," said Balcıoğlu.
Stating that Arçelik fosters new technologies and necessary regulations in emerging countries in collaboration with local authorities, Balcıoğlu referred to the company's investment in South Africa, acquisition of Defy in 2011: "As a result of our investments to design energy efficient appliances, average energy efficiency of refrigerators sold in South Africa has risen by more than 50%. We increased overall energy efficiency class of refrigerator sales from "E" to "A" and are still improving with new A++ products."
