Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) Announces the Expansion of the Rezence™ Standard to 50 Watts to Include Tablets, PCs and Peripherals
- Rezence™ first standard to wirelessly charge higher power devices with spatial freedom
- Fujitsu, Hon Hoi (Foxconn), Lenovo, Logitech, and Panasonic join as membership tops 100 companies
TAIPEI, Taiwan, June 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) today announces continued momentum on the expansion of the organization's Rezence-based wireless charging capabilities, becoming the first to deliver a specification for multi-device wireless charging up to 50 watts. Increasing the standard to 50 watts expands the range of products capable of using Rezence technology beyond smartphones to include laptops, tablets, and other consumer electronics. To support upcoming rapid product launches, publication and upgrade to the existing Baseline System Specification and certification program is expected by the end of 2014.

Notable tablet, personal computer and peripheral companies have joined the alliance, pushing the membership total past 100. Dell, Fujitsu, Hon Hoi (Foxconn), Lenovo, Logitech and Panasonic have joined the A4WP with the aim of integrating wireless charging into a wide range of consumer electronics devices. The broad industry support and continued momentum confirms the overall interest and investment in Rezence technology scalability, flexibility and consumer benefits.
"The ability to easily wirelessly charge a laptop, smartphone, or accessory marks a powerful shift, untangling us from the wires that have become a part of our everyday lives," said Peter Hortensius, chief technology officer, Lenovo. "In evaluating the different wireless charging technologies, we determined that the A4WP system operating at 6.78 MHz best meets our customers' needs because it delivers the power and convenience necessary to easily charge all your devices."
Wireless charging technologies operating at frequencies lower than 6.78 MHz are subject to technical limitations that make the move to higher power difficult to implement in a manner acceptable to consumers. While the organizations associated with these technologies are only now discussing the delivery of power in the 10-15 watt range, Rezence technology now delivers wireless power solutions in the 1-50W range that support multi-device charging while preserving freedom of placement in horizontal and vertical dimensions for a true drop and go user experience. The Rezence specification also supports wireless charging of multiple devices with differing power requirements on the same charging surface, a feature unique to magnetic resonance technologies.
"Logitech makes consumer electronics that span the power gamut, including computer and mobile accessories, gaming and music products," said Marcel Stolk, senior vice president, Logitech. "Having a universal wireless charging solution that is both flexible and scalable is important as consumers buy more devices that require charging. Rezence is the logical fit to enable us to deliver a superior customer experience."
"As highlighted by A4WP member companies at Computex, wireless power is about more than charging a phone on a pad. Flexibility, in both power and placement, are key to expanding wireless charging beyond a niche," said Kamil Grajski, President, Alliance for Wireless Power. "A4WP member companies are driving the expansion of the Rezence specification to enable new usage models. Extending Rezence to include laptops, tablets and peripherals is a necessary step towards a wire-free and universal charging experience for everyone."
A4WP members including Intel, Broadcom, MediaTek, PowerWoW and iCirround will showcase a variety of Rezence-based demonstrations at Computex 2014, in Taipei, Taiwan, 3-7 June, 2014.
