"Our gratitude goes out to all those who defended American values and interests by their brave service in Iraq," said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "We mourn the 4,500 Americans in uniform who were killed in the line of duty. We wish all the best to those returning home, ever mindful of their service and sacrifice."
The U.S. today announced an official end to the military mission in Iraq, with the president describing the American effort a "success." The last of the 4,000 troops now in Iraq will be departing in the coming days, leaving behind only those who will stay on as part of the diplomatic mission.
"The Iraqi people now have an unprecedented opportunity to chart their future direction," said Harris. "We hope it will be in the direction of democracy, respect for human rights, and peaceful coexistence, and, importantly, without interference from neighboring countries."
