ROCKVILLE, Md., May 5, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AEGIS.net, Inc. (AEGIS) a global leader in health information exchange standards implementation today announced it has been named one of five "Cool Vendors" in the Cool Vendors in Healthcare Providers, 2016 [i] report by Gartner, Inc. The annual report recognizes vendors that offer solutions to some of healthcare's biggest challenges. The Gartner Analysts authoring the report note that this year's Cool Vendors are ones that, "present unique solutions to existing and emerging problems that fall under the broad umbrella of transformation and change."
The focus of AEGIS is the area of health information exchange interoperability and standards conformance. Through its unique testing platforms – the AEGIS Developers Integration Lab (DIL) and the FHIR-centric Touchstone Project – as well as its unsurpassed subject matter expertise around health IT standards and interoperability, AEGIS has emerged as a leader in meeting this challenge.
"AEGIS views our inclusion in the Cool Vendor report by Gartner as the latest affirmation of our growing role in the healthcare community," states Mario Hyland, Founder and Senior Vice President of AEGIS. "More importantly, we believe it recognizes that while the goal of completing the puzzle of achieving true interoperability among electronic health systems is within the industry's reach, it simply cannot be done without effective, continuous testing."
In their report, Gartner states, "A connected, real-time healthcare network of networks is essential. New vendors that address interoperability, real-time data and information exchange, and virtual care capabilities have emerged in the market." AEGIS asserts that the key to making interoperability succeed whether with health data or any other kind of data exchange is through partnering systems speaking the same language. Just as two people communicate through a commonly shared language, health information systems do so via standards. AEGIS works closely with standards development organizations such as Health Level 7 International (HL7) to create test cases that effectively exercise each standard, helping to reduce self-interpretation. AEGIS has developed cloud-based testing platforms which implement standards conformance and interoperability testing in a Test-Driven-Development (TDD) integrated ecosystem. Available 24/7 x 35, the AEGIS DIL provides an easy-to-use environment for performing conformance and interoperability tests against published specifications, standards, and profiles, including templates and implementation guides.
The most exciting development to date by HL7 is the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) specification, which is currently a draft standard rapidly working its way toward becoming a "working standard." FHIR is already being implemented by leading health IT organizations worldwide. The benefit of FHIR compared to other standards is that it is designed specifically for easy integration with modern software technologies and agile software development methods. As such, it has the potential to dramatically accelerate health information exchange interoperability throughout the industry.
The AEGIS Touchstone Project launched in 2015 and provides the means to help guide FHIR implementations toward a high degree of conformance and interoperability within a continuous testing and integration model. Touchstone incorporates an AEGIS designed and built Natural Language Processing (NLP) engine. This capability shifts the onus of test script development away from software programmers and places it in the hands of business analysts and clinical experts, allowing for rapid acceleration in the development of a comprehensive body of test cases. Touchstone represents a new level of sophistication and complexity for test case execution and workflow based scenarios such as Care Coordination.
AEGIS is focused on testing compliance and conformance to healthcare industry standards in order to ensure interoperability. Robust testing is required for reliable and continuous interoperability and AEGIS delivers the testing skills and testing platforms to help organizations achieve the goal of industry-wide interoperability.
"Those of us at AEGIS recognize that while we are technologists, we are also patients and the family and friends of patients. The need for reliable interoperability of electronic health records is so much more than a line of business – it's a matter of patient safety, cost control, and quality of life," observes Michael Callihan, President of AEGIS. "We are pleased with Gartner's acknowledgement of AEGIS in the Cool Vendors report especially for the bright light we believe it casts on the importance of robust testing to ensure health information exchange interoperability and standards conformance."
