According To Payam Jarrah-Nejad, the Life of a Physician in Beverly Hills Is Exciting, But Nothing Like TV
The leading plastic surgeon known as "Dr. J" says his life is full of adventure, but it might not make great TV
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Imagine a show about a Doctor who performs Beverly Hills plastic surgery for some of the wealthiest and most beautiful people in Tinsel Town. Now imagine when he's not performing breast augmentation in Beverly Hills that doctor moonlights as an emergency cosmetic surgeon, working on some of the most sensitive and heart-wrenching cases in Los Angeles. The faces of adults and kids attacked by mad dogs or hurt in car accidents would routinely be saved. It doesn't end there, however. This Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon also has a penchant for going abroad and performing cosmetic procedures on the less fortunate around the world. The twist: this wouldn't be a TV show at all, but the real life of Dr. Payam Jarrah-Nejad, also known to his patients and staff as "Dr. J."
Dr. J's growing reputation for incredibly brief breast augmentation recovery in his patients is ever-growing, as is his public profile as a volunteer. "In countries with too few plastic surgeons kids have to go through life with some really unfortunate conditions," he explains.
Dr. J doesn't have all that much time for television, as you might expect. When asked if he watches doctor shows, he demurs, saying, "Those shows make people think being a doctor is some kind of crazy soap opera. It's more like having a really tough, but really rewarding job." He's unapologetic about bursting our bubbles, though. When asked what the percentage of accuracy the TV shows achieve, he says, "About 5%: Mostly the clothes." Yikes!
Even loyal fans of House used to remark that it was unrealistic for a doctor to encounter such a similar sequence of events happen every week. Dr. J has no such complaints, but a few observations. "I may not spend all of my time in the emergency room, but while I'm at work, I'm a lot busier than that." His busy Beverly Hills office is where he consults with potential new patients every day, and it does seem to keep Dr. J much busier than the average TV doctor. "Obviously I don't have the time or inclination for all those on-the-job love affairs either."
