Abandoned Grocery Becomes U-Haul Moving & Storage of Port Washington
SAUKVILLE, Wis., Aug. 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- U-Haul is incorporating its adaptive reuse practices to convert an abandoned grocery store at 835 E. Green Bay Ave. into a full-service moving and self-storage facility.
U-Haul Moving & Storage of Port Washington began offering moving services on June 8 at the location previously occupied by Piggly Wiggly. The 3.82-acre property currently offers truck and trailer rentals, towing equipment, moving supplies, boxes, U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers, and more.
When renovations are completed late this year, U-Haul customers will have access to 611 indoor self-storage units with climate-control availability, state-of-the-art security and 24-hour access.
"U-Haul is happy to take these abandoned buildings, repurpose them and preserve the materials that are used during demolition and rebuilding," U-Haul Company of South Eastern Wisconsin president Mike Schneider said. "Our presence not only makes the area more aesthetically pleasing, but it gives the do-it-yourself mover and self-storage customer in Saukville, Port Washington and surrounding communities a new level of convenience and service."
U-Haul will look to hire local Team Members and Schneider hopes that local contractors can get involved with the renovations. When this store is fully operational, he expects U-Haul to employ at least 20 Team Members at this facility.
This acquisition was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul® supports infill developments to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
"Until now, Milwaukee was the closest place to find this level of self-storage product," general manager Ross Brooks explained. "This location is phenomenal. It is nestled within a number of growing communities. Residents are extremely excited to see the building brought back to life, especially for such a useful purpose."
