A New Name, Expanded Vision for DC Nonprofit Transitional Housing Corporation (THC)
WASHINGTON, June 3, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Transitional Housing Corporation (THC), a nonprofit organization that provides housing and comprehensive support services to more than 600 families in the District of Columbia, is rebranding as Housing Up.
The new name and brand reflect the expanded scope of the organization's programs, which provide a full range of affordable, stable housing and services to the area's most vulnerable families so they can transform their lives.
The name Housing Up aligns with the organization's move away from transitional housing programs and toward permanent affordable housing solutions. The rebrand highlights the organization's status as one of the District's most innovative and successful nonprofits serving families experiencing homelessness.
"We chose Housing Up in recognition of our expanded range of housing options and services, and to show the direction we want to go, both now and in the future," said Philip Hecht, Housing Up President and CEO.
Founded in 1990, THC initially provided transitional housing and support services to 14 families at one location in Northwest DC. As affordable housing became increasingly scarce, the organization recognized the importance of permanent housing as the most effective way to end chronic family homelessness. Over the past 10 years, the organization expanded its housing options to include permanent supportive housing and rapid re-housing. At the same time, the organization became a nonprofit housing developer, creating and rehabilitating affordable housing throughout the city.
"Families experiencing homelessness have fallen off the ladder of opportunity," said Kimball Griffith, Housing Up board chair. "Our mission, with their participation, is to create the first rung – stable housing – so they can begin moving up the ladder. Our support services challenge families to build on their strengths and continue moving up. Our employment services open doors for additional mobility. And, our resident services build up resilient communities. All of these pieces are the essence of our organization."
"We are excited to begin a new chapter as Housing Up," Hecht said. "We proudly affirm our commitment to ending family homelessness by 2020 and to creating and sustaining opportunities for all in our nation's capital."
