89% of Medicare Plan Members Say They Do Not Receive Information About How to Lower Health Care Costs, HealthMine Survey

DALLAS, June 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Eighty-nine percent (89%) of Medicare health plan members aged 65+ said they do not receive information about how they can lower health care costs.  Further, 63% said they are not informed by their health plan about fees after receiving medical services. The data comes from a HealthMine survey fielded in May/June 2017 to 500 Medicare health consumers.

Almost half of seniors (47%) noted that they would like their plan to communicate with them more throughout the year about how they can lower their healthcare costs.

One key tool for plan members to manage costs is information about the state of their health and actions they need to take.

Only 17% of Medicare respondents said that their plan communicates with them about the state of their health.  Just 16% said their plan communicates with them throughout the year about their health risks. 

Yet, respondents said plans are a bigger help in reminding them about recommended health actions.  Forty-seven percent (47%) of Medicare plan members said they are reminded of actions to take to improve their health, and 48% noted they get reminders about recommended health screenings.

The HealthMine Medicare Plan Health Intelligence Survey queried 500 insured 65+ consumers who are enrolled in a Medicare program. The survey was fielded by Survey Sampling International (SSI) in May/June 2017. Data were collected via an opt-in panel. The margin of error is 4%.
