WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., May 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Just six days after the proclamation of National Hurricane Preparedness Week by President Obama, Nonprofit First® and Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County hosted this year's 6th Annual Nonprofit Hurricane Preparedness Day at the Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, FL.
The program focused on the importance of personal and organizational preparedness emphasizing that all disasters are local and that outside resources will not be "saving the day." The Keynote Speaker and Emergency Management Division Manager of PBS&J in Raleigh, NC, Steven Glenn, also stressed the importance of nonprofits working together to improve their capacity to help the community. Glenn served in 2005 as Recovery Director in support of disaster relief activities surrounding Hurricane Katrina.
Jennifer Beckman, Director of the Palm Beach County Disaster Recovery Coalition, led a structured tabletop exercise wherein participants were asked to define their critical, organizational, personal and cross-organizational plans and priorities in a worst-case scenario category 5 hurricane.
"I am confident that your participation today will result in an increased level of experience and knowledge that you can take back to your agencies and put to work in the unfortunate event that we are hit by a hurricane," stated Pedro del Sol, President and CEO of Nonprofits First.
At the end of the conference, Steve Weagle, Chief Meteorologist of WPTV NewsChannel 5, presented this hurricane season's forecast.
More than 100 local nonprofit leaders attended the event which was sponsored by Children's Service Council of Palm Beach County, Office Depot Foundation, CBIZ, and Burke Bogart & Brownell.
