600,000 Haitians Wait for Permanent Housing From NGOs That Collected $2 Billion for Haiti Relief
NEW YORK, Jan. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mobilize For Haiti announces a press conference at National Shrine to reassert its demand the that International NGOs that accepted an estimated $2 Billion in donations for Haiti Relief to build a minimum of 100,000 permanent housing units for the survivor of the Haiti's 7.0 earthquake. During Atlantic hurricane season tent cities will present heightened threat to the lives of the survivors. Tarps, tents water and others assistance were provided to survivors, however few permanent housing units were built and this remains the most immediate need of the estimated 600,000 Haitians who are living in IDP camps. Even 730 days after the earthquake that struck Haiti, it remains the biggest humanitarian crisis in the Western Hemisphere, however receives little media coverage. Approximately 1 million Haitian citizens had to leave IDP camps not because permanent housing was built for them, but because they could no longer endure the dire conditions in tents cities. The organization stresses that the solution to the housing problem is not to allow another 365 more days to pass in hopes that more homeless Haitians will go away, but to build permanent homes to house them. Mobilize For Haiti supports an immediate moratorium on forced evictions to allow enough time for citizens to find permanent housing solutions. Contrary to the broadly repeated land tenure issues raised as cause for the failure to build permanent homes Mobilize For Haiti will announce availability of land for housing construction near Jacmel, Cap Haitian, Croix des Bouquets, Leogane and other towns. Most large NGOs are on asserting that they have spent most of the funds they collected and that indeed they are running out of cash. 600,000 Haitians should not be left homeless especially after the generosity shown by nearly 50 percent of Americans who donated funds in order to help the Haitian survivors. All are invited to join a mass of remembrance organized by the Embassy of Haiti.
