NEW YORK, Sept. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The 53rd USHA National One-Wall Small Ball Handball Championships are well underway. Play began Wednesday, Sept. 25th at Noon and continues daily through Sunday. Tournament play is held at the Asser Levy Park handball courts at Surf Avenue and West Street (Coney Island).

Over 100 male and female athletes are competing at all age and skill levels. The premier action will be focused on the Men's and Women's Open Division looking for their chunk of the $8,000+ in prize money. The men's open singles finals are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28th at Noon. Men's open doubles finals are scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 29th @ Noon. The top male athletes participating include the Bastidas brothers – Tyree and Jurell, Pee Wee Castro, Joe Kaplan and Satish Jagnandan. Top female athletes include Danielle Daskalakis and Tracy Davis.
Spectators are welcome to the event; viewing is free and open to the public.
Executive Director Vern Roberts said, "It's great to be back in New York, the World Capital for One-Wall Handball, with the best players on display all weekend. We very much appreciate the efforts of Marty Markowitz and the New York City Parks Department to keep the event in Brooklyn." The USHA Hall of Fame, located at 2333 N. Tucson Blvd. since 1993, serves as the United States' shrine to the game of handball.
