Second Quarter 2011 Unaudited Financial Results
Total revenues for the second quarter ended June 30, 2011 were RMB332.4 million (US$51.4 million), an increase of 26.7% from RMB262.4 million for the same quarter in 2010.
Online recruitment services revenues for the second quarter of 2011 were RMB200.5 million (US$31.0 million), representing a 49.0% increase from RMB134.6 million for the same quarter of the prior year. The increase was primarily due to a greater number of unique employers using the Company's online recruitment services as well as higher average revenue per unique employer. Unique employers increased 23.2% to 168,957 in the second quarter of 2011 compared with 137,111 in the same quarter of the prior year driven by new customer acquisition and greater usage of online recruitment services. Average revenue per unique employer increased 20.9% in the second quarter of 2011 as compared to the same quarter in 2010 due to strong market demand and the impact of price increases implemented in April 2011.
Print advertising revenues for the second quarter of 2011 decreased 27.8% to RMB51.8 million (US$8.0 million) compared with RMB71.7 million for the same quarter in 2010. The decline was primarily due to a reduction in the number of cities where 51job Weekly is published and a 39.2% decrease in the estimated number of print advertising pages generated in the second quarter of 2011 to 1,574 from 2,587 pages in the same quarter in 2010. This decline was partially offset by higher average revenue per page. Average revenue per page increased 18.6% in the second quarter of 2011 as compared to the same quarter in 2010 primarily as a result of greater page contribution from higher priced cities.
Other human resource related revenues for the second quarter of 2011 increased 43.1% to RMB80.1 million (US$12.4 million) from RMB56.0 million in the same quarter of 2010 primarily due to greater market demand for our business process outsourcing and training services.
Gross profit for the second quarter of 2011 increased 34.1% to RMB226.6 million (US$35.1 million) from RMB169.0 million for the same quarter of the prior year. Gross margin, which is gross profit as a percentage of net revenues, expanded to 71.8% in the second quarter of 2011 compared with 68.0% in the same quarter in 2010 primarily due to greater economies of scale.
Operating expenses for the second quarter of 2011 increased 12.6% to RMB117.8 million (US$18.2 million) from RMB104.6 million for the same quarter of 2010. Operating expenses as a percentage of net revenues decreased to 37.3% for the second quarter of 2011 compared with 42.1% for the second quarter of 2010. Sales and marketing expenses for the second quarter of 2011 increased 14.9% to RMB78.7 million (US$12.2 million) from RMB68.5 million for the same quarter of the prior year primarily due to higher salary expenses, commissions and bonuses. General and administrative expenses for the second quarter of 2011 increased 8.4% to RMB39.1 million (US$6.0 million) from RMB36.1 million in the second quarter of 2010 primarily due to higher share-based compensation expense and office expenses.
Income from operations for the second quarter of 2011 increased 68.8% to RMB108.8 million (US$16.8 million) from RMB64.5 million for the same quarter of the prior year. Operating margin, which is income from operations as a percentage of net revenues, increased to 34.5% in the second quarter of 2011 compared with 25.9% in the same quarter of 2010.
Net income for the second quarter of 2011 increased 53.6% to RMB83.5 million (US$12.9 million) from RMB54.3 million for the same quarter in 2010. Fully diluted earnings per common share for the second quarter of 2011 were RMB1.41 (US$0.22) compared with RMB0.97 for the same quarter in 2010. Fully diluted earnings per ADS for the second quarter of 2011 were RMB2.82 (US$0.44) compared with RMB1.95 in the second quarter of 2010.
In the second quarter of 2011, the Company recognized total share-based compensation expense of RMB9.7 million (US$1.5 million) compared with RMB6.5 million in the second quarter of 2010. The Company also recognized loss from foreign currency translation of RMB2.1 million (US$0.3 million) in the second quarter of 2011 compared with RMB1.0 million in the second quarter of 2010 due to an appreciation of the Renminbi against the U.S. dollar.
Loss from impairment of long-term investments in the full amount of RMB15.1 million (US$2.3 million) was recognized in the second quarter of 2011 as the Company determined the carrying values were not recoverable. These long-term investments consisted of non-interest bearing loans provided to Area Link Co., Ltd., which is the holding company of a coupon advertising services business in China, in 2007 and 2008. Area Link is owned and operated by Recruit Co., Ltd., a large shareholder of the Company.
Excluding share-based compensation expense, loss from foreign currency translation and loss from impairment of long-term investments as well as their related tax impact, non-GAAP adjusted income for the second quarter of 2011 increased 78.2% to RMB110.3 million (US$17.1 million) compared with RMB61.9 million for the second quarter of 2010. Non-GAAP adjusted fully diluted earnings per common share were RMB1.87 (US$0.29) in the second quarter of 2011 compared with RMB1.11 in the second quarter of 2010. Non-GAAP adjusted fully diluted earnings per ADS in the second quarter of 2011 were RMB3.73 (US$0.58) compared with RMB2.22 in the second quarter of 2010.

Use of Non-GAAP Financial Measures
To supplement the consolidated financial statements presented in accordance with United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), 51job uses non-GAAP measures of income before income tax expense, income tax expense, adjusted net income, adjusted earnings per share and adjusted earnings per ADS, which are adjusted from results based on GAAP to exclude share-based compensation expense, loss from foreign currency translation and loss from impairment of long-term investments as well as their related tax impact. The Company believes excluding share-based compensation expense and its related tax impact from its non-GAAP financial measures is useful for its management and investors to assess and analyze the Company's core operating results as such expense is not directly attributable to the underlying performance of the Company's business operations and do not impact its cash earnings. The Company believes excluding loss from foreign currency translation and its related tax impact from its non-GAAP financial measures is useful for its management and investors as such translation loss is not indicative of the Company's core business operations and will not result in cash settlement nor impact the Company's cash earnings. The Company believes excluding the loss from impairment of long-term investments and its related tax impact from its non-GAAP financial measures is useful for its management and investors as such loss is unrelated to the Company's core business operations. 51job also believes these non-GAAP measures excluding share-based compensation expense, loss from foreign currency translation and loss from impairment of long-term investments, as well as their related tax impact, are important in helping investors to understand the Company's current financial performance and future prospects and to compare business trends among different reporting periods on a consistent basis. The presentation of these additional measures should not be considered a substitute for or superior to GAAP results or as being comparable to results reported or forecasted by other companies. The non-GAAP measures have been reconciled to GAAP measures in the attached financial statements.
