2K And Wikia Come Together With Fan Studio Partnership To Launch 'Civilization: Beyond Earth'
Partnership to Expand Sid Meier's 'Civilization' Game Franchise into Worlds of Science Fiction
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Wikia, the social universe of fandom and the ultimate source for powerful and relevant pop culture, entertainment and game expertise, today announces the company's latest Fan Studio partnership with 2K, launching the next series from the 'Civilization' gaming franchise, "Civilization: Beyond Earth." Wikia and 2K will work together to build out Civilization.wikia.com, which currently has roughly 400,000 fans visiting every month, as the ultimate resource for fans of the Civilization brand.
As one of the most successful franchises in gaming history, the 'Civilization' series of strategy titles from renowned game designer Sid Meier, has sold-in over 25 million units worldwide since the original launched in 1991, including more than 6 million units of Civilization V. Now in its fifth full iteration, with well-received mobile versions ("Civilization Revolution"), the franchise is leaving its historical roots and taking to the stars in the all-new "Civilization: Beyond Earth."
In today's world of the superfan, 2K has taken to the Wikia platform to embrace collaboration as a means of resonating with audiences beyond gaming and into pop culture and science fiction, thanks to the game's new focus of colonizing another planet. The partnership will provide fans of the official Wikia Civilization community access to Meier and his team at Firaxis with exclusive first-looks and early game code access as they chronicle their experiences of the game within the Wikia community.
"Sid Meier is a living legend of gaming. We couldn't be more excited to take this journey together with our superfans," stated Wikia Director of Programming for Games, Simon Cox. "Wikia has highly engaged and ever-growing fan communities with an insatiable appetite for science fiction and entertainment that is intelligent, challenging and fun. Civilization: Beyond Earth is a bull's-eye for their needs and for the dedicated fans that power the Civilization community on our platform."
Wikia's Fan Studio partnership with 2K shows a steady representation of strategic relationships for the company. Last month, as part of the partnership with Roddenberry Entertainment, Wikia announced "Warp 5.0: Fandom's Two-Year Trek Toward Sci-Fi's Golden Anniversary," a two-year branded campaign celebrating the 50th anniversary of Star Trek and part of the online Star Trek Wikia community portal, TREK INITIATIVE. In 2013, Wikia also announced their syndication partnership with Warner Brothers Interactive around the highly anticipated video game, Shadow of Mordor, among other collaborations including leading movie site Rotten Tomatoes to integrate Wikia content into their new entertainment product, the TV Zone.
